Tennis Betting at Elon: Markets, Margins and the Retirement Rule
Tennis is a betting favourite because it is played almost all year and every match is a duel: two players, a clear winner, no draw. That simplicity makes margins easy to check, while one rule — what happens when a player retires injured — causes more disputes than any other. If your Elon account offers sports betting with tennis, this guide covers the markets, the price check and the settlement rules worth knowing.

Tennis markets
- Match winner: the simplest bet, priced as a two-way market.
- Set betting: the exact score in sets, such as 2–0 or 2–1 in a best-of-three match.
- Game handicap: a games start or deficit across the match.
- Total games: over or under a line for games played in the match.
- Set and game markets in play: the winner of the current set or the next game, repriced point by point.
Checking a tennis margin
Because match-winner markets have only two outcomes, the margin check takes seconds. For illustration, prices of 1.50 and 2.60 imply 66.7% + 38.5% = 105.2%, a margin of about 5%. Prices of 1.53 and 2.70 on the same match elsewhere imply about 102.4%. Same match, same players — and a meaningfully better price. Margins are usually lowest on the main draws of major events and highest on lower-tier tournaments and exotic in-play markets.
Retirements, walkovers and other settlement rules
When a player retires mid-match, sportsbooks apply one of a few rules: void all bets unless the match is completed; let bets stand if at least one set was finished; or settle markets already decided and void the rest. A walkover — a player withdrawing before the match — is usually void for all bets. Changes of venue or surface, rain delays and matches moved to another day each have their own clauses. Read the tennis rules once, because the same bet can be a winner at one bookmaker and void at another.
Live tennis
In-play tennis is repriced on every point, and many markets close during the serve. Bet acceptance delays are normal, and streams lag behind the data feeds bookmakers use. The pace makes it easy to place far more bets than planned; decide a stake limit per match, and treat a run of "next game" bets as what it is — many small bets, each carrying the margin.
Integrity and scams
Lower-tier tennis has a history of integrity problems, and that history is used by scammers selling "fixed" matches. No legitimate tipster can guarantee a result. Anyone selling certainty is selling fraud, and joining in any attempt to influence a match is a crime.
